When our baby Leo is happy, Allan and I are happy. Prince Leo has been with us for about 5 months (just about 7 months old ) now and since we brought our precious angel home, there have been a lot more focus on preserving Leo's health and feeding him only natural/organic products with no preservatives.
Sometimes the snacks we buy him from various shops can be expensive and risky for people like me, who trust only a selected number of brands to make my puppy's treats. Dog Nation Sweet potato baked chews that you can buy at Petco can cost you around $8.99 plus tax for a small pouch of maybe 5 thin sliced of sweet potato. With Allan's little recipe here, we can get you more than a dozen all natural, crispy, chewy and economically efficient cookies for your best friend. You can do it all under $8.99.
$9 price tag and 5 small chews :( |

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
Step 2: Poke holes into your sweet potato(es) so they soften up easier when heated.

Step 3: Put the sweet potatoes in the microwave and heat them for about 6-10 mins depending on how big your sweet potatoes are. Leave them until they are tender and mushy. You should be able to feel through the skin of the potato if you try and poke it with your finger.
Step 4: Take them out of the microwave and cut each sweet potato into halves.
Step 5: Scoop the flesh out of the skin into the bowl, and discard your skins. Scoop out about 1 cup of flesh and transfer it into a larger bowl for mixing. Save any remaining sweet potatoes for future use!
Step 6: Mix whole what flour, applesauce, Barkworthies and eggs into the large bowl with the sweet potatoes until dough forms.
Don't mess with the boss in the kitchen. |
We received this through the Barkbox subscription we get once a month for Leo. |
Stay tuned for a Barkbox blog post soon ;) In the meantime, sprinkle these babies into your batter mix. |
Step 7: Turn the dough out on a well-floured surface and roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thick.
Flour your table good. You don't want your treats to stick! |
My baby's a pro. |
Step 8: Cut out your cute shapes using cookie cutters or cut the dough into strips with a pizza cutter. Arrange them onto an ungreased baking sheet.

I Spy whales, snails, fox, seashell... |
Step 9: Put your treats in the oven and let them bake! Bake until crisp for about 35-45 minutes.
Step 10: When your timer goes off, take your treats out of the oven and cool them in the pans for about 10 minutes before moving them to a plate or container and voilà, all done!
All good to go for your babies to enjoy :)
Now its time to see what Leo thinks about all of this...
He loves them. He went HAM on theses simple, yet delicious treats!
Allan and I had tons of fun doing this and we are planning on doing more cooking posts like this one in the future!
