“As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.” -Ernest Hemmingway
Last Friday, Allan and went on a cutsie little date. We went to The Mermaid Inn for a light dinner, located in the east village (2nd avenue between 5th and 6th street) and we got there just in time for their happy hour. The Mermaid Inn hosts a happy hour 7 days a week, between 5 and 7 PM Monday through Fridays, and they have specials on selected oysters, drinks and appetizers. We got there as it was opening, and boy were we glad we got there at that time, because the entire restaurant filled up within the next 20 minutes. All the people who came to dine were young, stylish, and trendy! The menu is great, the price is affordable, and the ambiance is surely romantic and hip. But really, you cant go wrong with a $1 oyster special right? So boy's keep this one in the back of your head for your next date ;)
We sat at the corner table by the window, right under the Kennedy's :)
I started with a Roséand Allan ordered a crisp Pinot.
We started off with a Mermaid Fish taco with marinated cabbage, pico de gallo, & pickled jalapeno
It was to die for. Warm and crispy with a light and refreshing lime bite at the end. Delicioso!!
Allan Loved it!
“He was a bold man that first ate an oyster.” -Jonathan Swift
East coast oysters are only $1, west coast oysters are $1.75 each (smaller but better).
I ordered a "Mermaid Mary" for my next drink, an old bay spicy Bloody Mary mix. It was really good! Bloody Mary's are kind of a hit or miss in NYC but this one definitely hit the spot!
Fried Oysters!
nom nom nom :)
Shrimp Corndog!!! The mustard on the side was overpowering and not the perfect combo for me, as I would have paired the corndog with a side of lite aioli, or ketchup. It was still a yummy snack!
Fortune teller fish!~
Save the best for last! At the end of our meal, the waitress brought us free chocolate mousse and a "Fortune Teller Fish"! It was a nice touch at the end of our fantastic and light meal. The chocolate mousse was amazingly creamy and delicious but, the fish was what really made your meal extra special.
The movement of the fish is supposed to tell you what sort of mood you are in.
I am totally in a good mood :) but I guess we will see what the fish says...
My fish was all over the place! It moved in every single direction...I must have been feeling all of those crazy emotions haha!
